Victorious Life Christian Church has managed to hold on to its congregation over the years, but church leadership is still faced with the challenge of maintaining a more-than-150-year-old house of worship. A recent repair showed creativity and ingenuity.
As Michael Lopez of Troy Architecture Practice (TAP) reports, the church's sandstone foundation was deteriorating. The blocks at street level looked as if they had melted. Their decorative, vermiculated (tooling to resemble worm tracks) surface was crumbling and falling off. The church turned to TAP, a nonprofit that provides design and planning services to low-income people, neighborhood groups and other nonprofit organizations.
